  • Notes
    • Printed in the Buffalo, Wyo Bulletin (newspaper) March 4, 1897 John Barkey's house by Lake DeSmet, eight miles north of Buffalo, burned literally to he ground Sunday afternoon. The house and all of its contents were reduced to ashes. Oct 4, 1900 John Barkey hold the record for threshing. Last week on the Kingsbury - Todd ranch he threshed 100 bushels of wheat and 2,580 bushels of oats in a day's threshing. He then threshed the wheat and 700 bushels of oats in one afternoon and the next afternoon finished the oats

    • John U only had 3 months or years of schooling and left home at 12 due to conflict in the family with stepmother and possibly Will & Father.
He worked on a farm job for 3 years at $12.00 a year. Then to Kansas husking corn - Did 150 bushels one day but average 125 bushels a day.
John moved to Colorado hacking ties in the mountains for the railroad. In the Rocky Mountain News on 4/4/1870 page 4C3 a J.M. Barkey (should have been J.U.B.) is listed as a stage coach passenger to Central or Central City, Colo.
He lost his first stake (money) gambling in Denver. Back to the mountains for another stake. Accumulated $300.00 and caught a ride on a freight wagon of Munkers and Mothers to Buffalo, Wyo in 1880 or 81.
Went to work in the general store of Bobby Foot. Later went into freighting with 8 horses and 2 wagons.
He married Ida Rose Mayer. They were married at Helen Buell's ranch on Shell creek. Rode to the ceremony on horseback and eventually settled on their homestead on Lake DeSmet. They were well known for their fine work horses and Ida Rose well known for her ability to handle those horses. She could still ride horseback at 75 years old.
In May 24, 1970 the Denver Post has a write up about Lake DeSmet and the supposed sighting of a sea monster, by Ida.
also climbed to the roof of their house to raise the flag on the 4th of July when the men were to busy to help her.
Ida (Mimi to grandkids) told Aunt Patsy this story:
As a teenager living near Kearney, Wyo her parents had gone to Buffalo shopping forbidding some of the children to leave the home. It was winter and very cold. The girls decided to go to a party dance in Kearney anyway and in their haste to get going Ida forgot to go to the bathroom. Racing across the frozen fields Ida wet her heavy white pantaloons. By the time they reached the dance, the pantaloons were frozen and Ida was in dismay. She couldn't dance or she'd screech and crack and she couldn't stand near the stove to dry our or she'd steam and smell - so much for the forbidden fruit!
